Superstitions is an irrational belief in the world that lead to the bad luck or good luck. Ever since there are humans on the earth, superstitions are around. Superstitions are different in every culture and they play a big role in every culture and societies. Here we have a list of the weirdest superstitions that people think are real.

Lighting 3 cigarettes from 1 match is a superstition. People think that the third cigarette is not good to be lighted by one match. Its origin is from the World War 1, the soldiers of that war thought that if three of them lit the cigarette from one match then one of them would end up being dead or the third person who has lit the cigarette from one match would be shot. Their thought that the strike of the match would inform the enemy about their location.

In the Turkish and Hungarian cultures, chewing gums at night are considered as bad luck and we are sure that you are not gonna believe it. Even if after dinner you are not feeling well and stinking, it is not good for you to chew gum at that time. It is believed if someone chews gum after dinner or at night, he or she is chewing a dead body or human flesh. We have found this superstition in Harry Oliver’s book “Black Cats and Four Leaf Clovers”.

In middle ages a black cat was considered as a sign of death is coming. So it was believed that if someone crosses the path of the black cat or even the black raven, their life is gonna be in danger or something wrong is going to happen with them.

IN this modern society, many of the people believe that if they cross the path of black cat there is something wrong is going to happen while there are also some people who don’t believe in those superstitions.

Even Number of Flowers

You can find hundreds of stalls selling flowers in Russia as giving flowers in Russia is a matter of Honouring. However, while giving flowers, there is one condition that you should only give flowers in odd numbers.

Giving 13 roses to a woman in Russia is considered as good luck while giving 12 roses is considered as bad luck. If you are going to give flowers to a Russian woman, the number of flowers from 1 to 1001 is considered as a symbol of happiness. So as this, giving 1 rose is a symbol of saying that “You’re everything I have” and giving 5 roses says “I Love You”. Even numbers of flowers are used in funerals so even number of flowers is considered as death.

Wedding Superstitions

In many countries and cultures in the world, if it starts raining at your wedding then it is considered good luck for the bride and groom. It is believed that rain is a sign of wealth and happiness. It is also a sign of fertility and shows that you will have children soon in future. It is also believed that the rain will wash all the bad memories of the past and allow both the groom and the bride to start their new life.

While in some other countries, rain is considered as bad luck. Raining on a wedding day represents that how much tears the bride would shed during her marriage.

Umbrella Superstition


In some countries, if you open an umbrella inside the house, it is considered as a bad luck. The origin of this superstition is from Ancient Egyptians. At that time, the umbrella was used to protect the higher status people from the sun lights when they get out of their shelters and not in the rain. It was believed that opening an umbrella in the house would make the Sun god sad and the Sun God will punish them.

It was also believed that if the weather shows that it might rain today and if you bring the umbrella outside the house, it will not rain then.

Twelve Grapes Superstitions

Eating twelve grapes at the midnight of the new year eve is considered to be a tradition as well as the superstition that came from the year 1895 which believes that eating 12 grapes at the midnight of the new year eve brings 12 months of good luck.

On the new year eve, thousands of people gathered at the Puerto Del Sol to celebrate the new year eve and have dance and fun as well as to eat twelve grapes while downing a glass of bubbly.

Bird Poop Superstition

Following the superstitions, if a bird poops on your head or your body while walking around is considered as a good luck sign. Whenever sailors had bird poop on them, they banned anyone from removing that poop until the next rainstorm.

Seaweed Superstition

In Korea, eating seaweed soup just before the day or the night of your big exam is considered as a bad luck. They believe that if you eat the soup, the soup is going to trash all the information from your mind that you read or learned. Instead of eating soup, you should eat sticky food like candy or toffee.

Tucking Your Thumb While Passing the Graveyard

This is one of the weirdest superstition in the world. In Japan, if you are passing a graveyard, you should keep your thumb tucked in the hand to save your parents from dying because of the word “Thumb” is referred to the parent-finger. So that means if you are tucking your thumb inside your hand, that means you are protecting your parents from dying.
